The University, through the office of the Dean of Students held an International Students orientation day. The session was attended by Windle Trust International Kenya, who are the main sponsors of students from refugee camps. 41 International students were taken through what the UoN has to offer and what’s expected of them by the various departments.
Speaking during the orientation, the Dean of Students, Johnson Ireri Kinyua, opened by congratulating students for being selected to pursue their higher education at the UoN. He went further to give some information about the country Kenya and in addition to that, highlighted the structure of the university.
Mr. Kinyua elaborated on the corporate image of the University and encouraged students to participate in different Students’ Associations and Clubs that trigger excellence since the University is committed to scholarly excellence. He took a good time to recognize the University alumni and students who have excelled in different capacities giving examples of Ferdinand Omanyala who is now a world record holder and the President of the Republic of Kenya, His Excellency William Samoei Ruto who was once a student at the University of Nairobi.
During the occasion, key areas concerning students were discussed which included students support service, students’ life on campus, security and safety issues, and students’ identification and travel arrangements and the students’ code of conduct.
Students were encouraged to conduct themselves with the outmost decorum while in the university. They were encouraged to always be humble and follow the relevant protocols when they have an issue that need to be addressed. ‘Students behaviour remains key in academia and when students misbehave, it show how low they are when it comes to personal development,’ noted Jane Kahora from the Academic Registrar office.
The students were given time to interact with Assistant Dean of students and students’ counsellors together with head of Career Services to have a chat on matters concerning life skills, careers, psycho-social support, and general students’ matters.
